Congratulations, Seattle Mariners!

On September 23, 1997, the Seattle Mariners defeated the Anaheim Angels in the Kingdome and won their second American League West championship in three years.

The statistics below reflect the standings on the day before that deciding victory. Thus will the updates of this page end... until the first day of the 1998 season, when I'll once again establish the Magic Numbers for all the teams in whatever league and division the Texas Rangers call home after the radical realignments are done.

In fact, I may compile full Magic Number statistics for all the divisions -- or even in all the leagues -- if I get enough support from You, the Fans. So let me know at robertb@geocities.com if you're interested! Remember, the magic number for the Rangers in '98 is (probably) 163!

The table below gives the "Magic Numbers" for the American League West Championship for 1997. The Magic Number between a pair of teams is the number of Your Team's Wins plus Your Opponent's Losses which will put Your Team ahead of Your Opponent at the end of the season.

Your

W L Texas

For example, to find the Texas Rangers' magic number against the Seattle Mariners, follow the Rangers row across to the Mariners column. But don't forget that that number only tells you the magic number for the Rangers vs. Mariners... if the Angels made a run for the lead, you would want to calculate the Rangers vs. Angels magic number separately. This table lets you see it all at a glance!

Go Ahead... Make Me Update!

Think I'm not updating often enough?

(ok, maybe in early '98...)
Give me your email address and I'll let you know I did it:

This may not be the prettiest Magic Number page around, but it gets the job done! Later in the season, you may find a more nicely-formatted version (for the Texas Rangers, who are destined to win it all anyway finish ahead of Oakland if they're lucky) at Chris Pikulinski's Rangers Magic Number Page (new URL). His site was definitely the place to be when the Rangers won the American League West in 1996!

Are you wondering how Seattle and Anaheim might fare in the Wild Card race? Send me a note and I'll add a Wild Card Magic Number section. Just one note, that's all it would take to motivate me...

This info comes from a pretty simple Excel spreadsheet. If you want a copy of the spreadsheet for yourself, send me a note and tell me what spreadsheet format you'd prefer (Excel 3.0, Office 97, etc).

And now, a word for our Robotic visitors!

Finally, for the benefit of the search engines, let me add some important information:

Teams covered by this chart

This page covers the American League West (American League Western Division, AL West, A.L. West).
If there is enough interest, I could expand this page to include:

and even...

If your team is in one of these divisions, and you want to see your magic number here, send me a note!

Ain't this an ugly counter? But it's got great stats, don't 'ya know...

The most important thing about this counter is that it helps me determine whether you like this page enough to come back. If you're coming back regularly, I'll update the page every day! If not, I'll update it every couple of days or so.

I had 76 hits through the 1997 season. That's not a lot, but each one was, well, very special...
Hoping for better luck in '98!

Thanks for your support! - Robert Brooks
