The table below gives the "Magic Numbers" (and rounded Games Ahead/Behind) for the American League West Championship for 1998. The Magic Number between a pair of teams is the number of Your Team's Wins plus Your Opponent's Losses which will put Your Team ahead of Your Opponent at the end of the season.
| Your Team | Record | Your Opponent | Games Remaining | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| W | L | % | Texas Rangers | Seattle Mariners | Anaheim Angels | Oakland A's | ||
| Rangers | 87 | 72 | .547 | x-9/18 (+12 1/2) | 1 (+3) | x-9/16 (+15) | 3 | |
| Angels | 84 | 75 | .528 | 7 (-3) | x-9/19 (+9 1/2) | x-9/16 (+12) | 3 | |
| Mariners | 74 | 84 | .468 | elim 9/18 (-12 1/2) | elim 9/19 (-9 1/2) | 2 (+2 1/2) | 4 | |
| A's | 72 | 87 | .453 | elim 9/16 (-15) | 7 (-2 1/2) | elim 9/16 (-12) | 3 | |
For example, to find the Texas Rangers' magic number against the Seattle Mariners, follow the Rangers row across to the Mariners column. But don't forget that that number only tells you the magic number for the Rangers vs. Mariners... if the Angels made a run for the lead, you would want to calculate the Rangers vs. Angels magic number separately. This table lets you see it all at a glance!
This may not be the prettiest Magic Number page around, but it gets the job done! It was inspired by Chris Pikulinski's Rangers Magic Number Page (new URL 8/98), which was definitely the place to be when the Rangers won the American League West in 1996! Follow along here as the Rangers add another pennant to the collection at The Ballpark in Arlington in 1998.
This info comes from a pretty simple Excel spreadsheet. If you want a copy of the spreadsheet for yourself, send me a note and tell me what spreadsheet format you'd prefer (Excel 3.0, Office 97, etc).
This page covers the American League West (American League Western Division, AL West, A.L. West).
If there is enough interest, I could expand this page to include:
If your team is in one of these divisions, and you want to see your magic number here, send me a note!
