Rockzillaworld -- web site mirror

How much can one fan of OKOM (Our Kind Of Music) accomplish in just a couple of years? Plenty, if it's Rockzilla, aka photographer Michael Johnson. From 2003 to 2005, rockzilla.net was a chronicle of the alt.country scene from a uniquely Texan perspective. But all good things must end, and Rockzilla has retired from the online 'zine scene.

This mirror site was copied from the rockzilla.net site with the express permission of Rockzilla hisself. If you don't believe me, go to the KHYI-Fans email list and ask him! Buddy will back me up, too.

Davin James
At The Lone Star Cafe & Club
6/23/2001

Davin James has built a name for himself as one of the Lone Star State's finest guitar slingers and his recent performance at the Lone Star Cafe & Club made it clear to me that his reputation is justified.

The East Dallas honky tonk was about half full when James and band took the stage at around 10pm. What the crowd lacked in size, they made up for in enthusiasm as Davin opened with a funky, growling rendition of the Hank Williams, Jr. hit "Whiskey Bent & Hell Bound". Hell, he actually made me LIKE that tune!

The Bullnettle band on this night consisted of Joe Perry on bass, Denny Dew on keyboards, and the great Richie Vasquez(Road Kings, Killbilly) on drums. They backed Davin throughout a kaleidescopic mixture of tunes ranging from Delta Blues to Western Swing to Traditional Country and to plain hard-assed Rock & Roll, all laced with ample doses of James' scorching guitar.

Davin really worked the small crowd. After he coaxed them into singing along on "Nowhere Lounge", he hit them with his familiar, "If ya'll can't do any better than that, I'll pack this shit up and go home", and they ate it up.

James closed his show with a rocking version of Rusty Weir's "Don't It Make You Wanna Dance?" that filled the dance floor and left some of us sitting there a little slack-jawed with a screaming guitar solo. The boy can pick.

If you haven't seen Davin James and The Bullnettle Band live, you're really missing out on something special. Check out davin's web site at www.davinjames.com to order CD's and to get the latest tour information.
