Rockzillaworld -- web site mirror

How much can one fan of OKOM (Our Kind Of Music) accomplish in just a couple of years? Plenty, if it's Rockzilla, aka photographer Michael Johnson. From 2003 to 2005, rockzilla.net was a chronicle of the alt.country scene from a uniquely Texan perspective. But all good things must end, and Rockzilla has retired from the online 'zine scene.

This mirror site was copied from the rockzilla.net site with the express permission of Rockzilla hisself. If you don't believe me, go to the KHYI-Fans email list and ask him! Buddy will back me up, too.

 Travis smith and cabin Fever

"Too Close to Home"

by Serena B. Kundysek

Travis Smith and his band Cabin Fever, each from different Texas towns, fortunately found a way to come together to cut a debut CD which they have entitled "Too Close to Home". Most of the band members are from around the Dallas-Fort Worth area. There's Kevin Payne, drums, from Lewisville, John Deans, harmonica, from Cedar Hill, Joseph Paras, bass, from Arlington, Joel Kelso, lead guitar, vocals, from Allen and Travis Smith, lead vocals and acoustic, from Ovilla, Texas. Just for grins I looked on the map to see where Ovilla is located and it appears that Ovilla is in Ellis County, just south of Dallas County.

Now that we have that all figured out, let me get down to the CD, which was published by Travis' Blue Roan Publishing. On the title track, 'Too Close to Home' Smith sings of a guy who is torn between a woman and blazing his own trail in life, but then he pawns his guitar when he realizes that the Nashville thing just isn't going to happen. Travis is singing to an old flame and hoping that she is going to hear the song radio and it's going to "hit too close to home."

A wisp of a cloud on a hot Texas day
Cools things for a minute, then drifts away
And the memory of a woman takes me back in time
Don't know where I'm going,
Guess I'm looking for a sign

Sometimes the road to choose is hard to tell
The best things in life come from those that blaze a trail
I'm blazing mine.I'm blazing mine

...So, girl if you hear this song and it hits too close to home
You knew the day you met me that I was born to roam.

Travis Smith wrote all the songs on "Too Close to Home". Clever lyrics which speak of hard times, women that won't leave, cheatin' women, meetin' women and drinking beer on Saturday night ( all the country songwriter's staples), coupled with traditional country melodies makes for a "tear in my beer" blend of country music. My only knock on the album is that sometimes Travis' enthusiasm for his music doesn't come through in his singing.

My favorite song on this "Too Close to Home" is 'Time With You'. It has a nice melody, good lyrics and just flows well. It's a song about slowing down life in the fast lane and spending time with the one you love. This song has a smooth sort of Bellamy Brothers feel to it:

I've got so many irons in the fire,
so many things to do
Don't mean to put off til tomorrow
just want to spend some time with you

Wish I could stop, the hands of time from spinning
Wish I could slow things down a day or two
We could take advantage of the situation
I just want to spend some time with you

Travis Smith and Cabin Fever have done a pretty solid job their first time out. From looking at their busy schedule, they are out there paying some serious dues, and I expect that their next album will be even stronger than "Too Close to Home". To find out more about the band, and for the latest tour schedule, go to their website www.hometown.aol.com/travissmithmusic and order a copy of "Too Close to Home".
