Rockzillaworld -- web site mirror

How much can one fan of OKOM (Our Kind Of Music) accomplish in just a couple of years? Plenty, if it's Rockzilla, aka photographer Michael Johnson. From 2003 to 2005, rockzilla.net was a chronicle of the alt.country scene from a uniquely Texan perspective. But all good things must end, and Rockzilla has retired from the online 'zine scene.

This mirror site was copied from the rockzilla.net site with the express permission of Rockzilla hisself. If you don't believe me, go to the KHYI-Fans email list and ask him! Buddy will back me up, too.

TrainWreck
Wrecked
Bump & Go Records

by Dave and Lavona Wine

The debut release of Dallas, TX based Trainwreck, Wrecked sounds more like the third or fourth release from a band that had been around for several years. What a welcome relief it is to hear a relatively new band that is capable of putting out a record that simply a pleasure to listen to. Trainwreck is a polished group of talented artists consisting of J.D. Whittenburg on lead vocals, rhythm guitar & harmonica, Jenn Tusa-Albritton on vocals, Oliver Butler on lead guitar, Rob Stave on fiddle & mandolin, Allen Cryer on bass, Jim Eisenbeck on drums & percussion. David Zajicek plays lead guitar and percussion on "No Place to Go", lead guitar on "Save Me", and "Café Desire", dobro on "Tragic Hero", and acoustic guitar on "Downtown"

All but one of the songs on Wrecked were written or co-written by the amazing Mr. Whittenburg, who has the ability to magically pull the listener into his songs- baring his soul and experiences and making you feel that you've lived these experiences with him.

The first track is a cover of Townes Van Zandt's "Loretta" . The second track is a superb song called "Mexico" which is about a young Texan heading down to Mexico to try to drown his sorrows while at the same time forsaking his mother's life long instructions.

Don't worry mama, I might not go to Mexico
I might not dance with the ladies in the bars
Don't worry mama, I might not go to Mexico
But I got to find a spot to mend this broken heart

Maria she's nice she takes my money
Leads me upstairs but I'm feeling kinda funny
I was never one to put a price on love
Morning comes fast I stay a little longer
Days turn to weeks, tequila getting stronger
I got to find a way to shake these Mexico blues
Down past the Rio Grande, they'll make a mess outta you

I would have to say that my favorite track on this CD is "No Place To Go". Its' upbeat rhythm is catchy and the lyrics are tantalizing leaving you wanting to hear more of Trainwreck's songs. I feel that with the right exposure this song could really launch Trainwreck. This track showcases the band's many talents, and after your first listen, you'll find this tune running through your head the rest of the day.

I call you on the phone
I got this ringing in my ears
That tells me you're not home
Or you're hiding from your fears

So I sit and I wait
For a new day to start
I'm gonna find a way
To get back into our heart

I got no place to go
I got nothing but time
And time's moving slow
I got no place to go

Even without growing up in Waco, the song "Old Blevins Road" still brings back wonderful thoughts of those school days spending time with friends. Every town in America has a "Blevins Road"- a special place where you met your friends back in the good old days. "Old Blevins Road" ia a prime example of how JD Whittenburg performs his magic by pulling the listener into his songs.

Some nights we'd build a fire, sometimes we'd leave our headlights on
Some girl would always cause a big fight, but it would never last too long
Sooner or later it would be time to go, hey man, be safe driving home
See you in class on Monday; see you right back here next weekend.

Old Blevin's road
That's were we used to go
We thought they would never find us there
We thought they would never ever find us there

"Downtown Is Thumping" is a great song about driving to Austin and, among other things, falling in love. That is followed by "Who Needs California" another song about lost love and wanting to get away. Both songs are energetic, refreshing, and you find yourself tapping along to the beat.

But me I just sit in this old dark house
Thinking about the time we said goodbye
And wishing that I was someplace else
I hear California is kinda nice

But with weather like this, who needs California
Who needs California, no not I
Who needs California Maybe I should just go outside

J.D.'s voice has a cool early Bruce Springstein kind of sound, and on one tune I even here a little hint of Mick Jagger. His voice, blended with the beautiful backup vocals of Jenn Tusa-Albritton, creates an unmistakably unique sound that is the trademark of Trainwreck. Recorded and mixed at Largemouth Recording Studios, China Springs, TX, the band's sound, which I like to call Texas renegade country, has been expertly produced making Wrecked a great sounding album. Out of the fifteen tracks on Wrecked, there isn't one that I didn't like. Since receiving it in the mail it hasn't left the player and will remain an all time favorite of mine. If you want to get the most out of your hard earned entertainment dollar, you can't go wrong by picking up a copy of Wrecked.

Wrecked can be purchased at: CD World Dallas, TX and at Bill's Records and Tapes Dallas, TX. or on-line at: Amazon.com Visit Trainwreck at www.trainwrecktx.com for all their latest information and upcoming gigs.
